Why “We Do Everything” Is a Red Flag in CNC Machining: An Okuma Quality Manager’s Take
I’m a quality compliance manager at Okuma. I review every machine before it reaches customers—roughly 250 units a year. I’ve rejected 4% of first builds in 2024 due to spindle alignment issues. So when I tell you that the phrase “we can do anything” makes me reach for a red pen, I’m not being dramatic.
The fastest way to lose trust in manufacturing is to claim total versatility. In CNC machining, knowing what you should not do is a feature, not a weakness.
It took me four years and about 200 acceptance reviews to understand that a machine tool is not a promise. A used Okuma lathe can be a superb piece of equipment, but it doesn’t automatically make a shop good at every kind of turned part. Same goes for a five-axis machining center like the Okuma MU-6300V-L. Its max machining volume (the usable work envelope, not the brochure number) is generous—but that envelope is just where the hard work begins. You still need tooling strategy, post-processing, and an inspection plan that proves the part is right.
Most buyers focus on the machine model and completely miss the process engineering behind it. The question everyone asks is, “What machines do you have?” The question they should ask is, “What jobs do you nail over and over?” That’s an outsider blind spot, and it costs a ton of money.
Let me give you an example. A shop near us bought a used Okuma lathe at auction. The machine had great bones, but they never checked the turret alignment after the rigging broke down. Six weeks later, they were producing scrap at 40 pieces an hour. The lathe wasn’t the problem—the missing process was. New or used, the machine is only the starting point.
The Machine Is Not the Expertise
I’ll use Okuma as an example because I know it best. We build CNC lathes, machining centers, multitasking machines, and controls. We do not build laser systems, and that’s okay. If you need a CO2 laser resurfacing Miami clinic, you wouldn’t ask a machine tool builder for a face treatment. You’d go to someone who does nothing but that. The same logic applies within our industry: a robotics CNC machining company that promises everything—from unattended production cells to one-off implants—is usually overselling at least one part.
I’ve audited automation cells where the robot was technically working but the gripper design was wrong, so every third part came out nicked. That’s not robotics CNC machining; that’s a robot attached to a problem. Real robotic integration means consistent cycle times, repeatable in-process gauging, and a fail-safe for every edge case. The capability is much narrower—and much more valuable—than “we do everything.”
Seriously, how often does “we can do everything” survive a metrology review? Not often. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful and substantiated. “We can do anything” is a claim that needs a lot of evidence. That’s not just my opinion; it’s a legal baseline.
What I Learned From Rejecting 8,000 Units
I assumed “same specifications” meant the same result from two different vendors. Didn’t verify. Turned out each had different inspection methods.
We received a batch of 8,000 units that looked fine on the outside. Then our CMM—coordinate measuring machine—showed a positional deviation of 0.02 mm on a critical hole pattern. The vendor said, “It’s within industry standard.” Maybe it was. It wasn’t within our customer’s standard. We rejected the whole batch. The redo cost them, but it taught me that boundaries are not just for suppliers—they’re for us as buyers.
Now every contract includes a CMM report requirement and a defined measurement method. Inconsistent inspection standards are a deal-breaker. (Note to self: turn this into a case study.)
How to Find CNC Machining Work (and Keep It)
If you’re trying to figure out how to find CNC machining work, here’s a counterintuitive tip: stop trying to be everyone’s answer. Specialize in a few operations you can prove. Publish your real tolerances. Show your inspection data. If a job is outside your expertise, refer another shop—the referral usually comes back to you later. That’s how you build trust. It beats buying a used Okuma lathe and telling every prospect you’ll make their parts flawlessly.
When I see a shop’s website list 20 processes and five industries, I don’t see capability. I see procurement risk. When I see one with a clear specialty—say, “tight-tolerance turned parts up to two inches”—I see a partner. Once you understand this, specialization feels like a no-brainer. It also gives your quoting process a filter: you won’t waste weeks chasing jobs that don’t fit.
But wait, you might say: “Okuma makes multitasking machines—turning, milling, even five-axis in one setup. Isn’t that ‘we can do everything’?”
No. Multitasking expands the envelope, but it doesn’t replace a grinder, an EDM, or the process knowledge for exotic materials. Even the Okuma MU-6300V-L max machining volume has limits. You’re not going to hold a 0.005 mm bore tolerance on the far end of a long shaft without dedicated engineering, in-process probing, and a machine that’s been maintained with discipline. A good engineer knows those limits. A good partner tells you about them before you sign.
Look, I’m not saying a specialized shop is always better. There are general machining houses that do great work because they’ve built separate cells with separate quality systems. But that’s still a set of boundaries—just more of them. The problem is the shop that treats every new inquiry as if it fits. That’s where spec ambiguity, missed tolerances, and surprise rework come from.
Bottom line: The vendor who says, “This isn’t our strength—here’s who does it better,” earns my trust for everything else. I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. If you’re buying a machine or choosing a CNC shop, ask about boundaries. The answer tells you more about quality than any brochure.
